St. John Neumann  was born March 28, 1811, in Bohemia. In 1836, he immigrated to the United States, where he joined the Redemptorist order. In 1852, he became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia (1852–60). While Bishop of Philadelphia, Neumann founded the first Catholic diocesan school system in the United States. He died January 5, 1860.

In 1977, he became the first U.S. bishop and first U.S. man to be canonized.
